Intel Corporation has committed to reaching the United Nation Sustainable Developmental Goals. Intel believes technology is playing a fundamental role in solving the different environmental challenges to reach the UN SDGs by 2030. Intel Corporation has created its business model creating a positive impact on society, preserving the environment and innovating its product to increase energy efficiency. Intel does not obtain its raw materials from conflict areas; therefore, the elaboration of each product delivered an ethical message to their customers and the public. Intel Corporation has a clear sustainable vision.

Intel’s Sustainability Strategy
The sustainability strategy for (Intel) that incorporates the most with the four sustainability strategies is Beyond Compliance. Intel not only wants to increase the efficiency of their organizational process, but they also want customers and the general public to acknowledge their effort. Beyond compliance concentrates on differentiation rather than cost reductions, firms pursuing this strategy even approve unprofitable environmental initiatives to reduce their ecological footprint. Intel is reducing their climate footprint by investing in alternative energy and smarter technologies for their products. Intel has undertaken a series of actions and programs to reduce its carbon footprint and two of them is emission reductions and energy conservation projects. This project includes green building designs, green power purchase, energy conservation chemical substitution, and energy conservation projects, they are recognizing that climate change is a problem that can only be addressed by broad contributions from all sectors of society and they have undertaken a series of actions and programs to reduce it.

Intel is subscribed to businesses code of environmental management and they also invest in unprofitable environmental improvements. They are playing a leadership role in the environment, energy and climate committees of its lead trade associations, such as the semiconductor industry association (SIA) and the information technology industry council (ITI) in the U.S.

The semiconductor manufacturing process requires the use of fluorinated gases (F-gases), recognizing the potential conflict of technical needs and climate science, the semiconductor industry led by Intel has dramatically reduced its F gas emissions over time even as the industry has grown. The official goal for intel on the emission reductions was to reduce industry emissions 10% by 2010 with 1995 emissions as the baseline. The industry exceeded this goal, with Intel going well beyond the goal: by the end of 2010, Intel achieved approximately a 50% emissions reduction in absolute terms, and a more than 80% reduction on a normalized, per chips basis.

Intel not only contributes to the environment, they also concentrate on society by investing in inspiring and empowering future innovators. Ensuring that the next generations of innovators are empowered, diverse and inclusive. Intel and the intel foundation support programs like computer science, artificial intelligence, secure connectivity and microprocessor technology to create quality jobs to the industry and to applying technology to solve global challenges. They have invested over $2 billion in higher education’s programs working with more than 500 universities. Intel is dedicated to collaborating across sectors, communities, and organizations and working with the urgency that rapid transformation demands, ensuring that the next generations of innovators are broadly diverse in terms of ethnicity, gender, and geography so they can succeed in our rapidly changing digital era.

Intel’s Sustainable Stage

The sustainable stage that we believe Intel is at is stage two “making value chain sustainable”. As the article “whys sustainability is now the key driver of innovation” mentioned the best way companies can attract new customers and intensify the relationships with established ones is to be committed to sustainable business practices throughout their operations and supply chain. The article points out that the drive to be more efficient extends from manufacturing facilities and offices to the value chain, at this stage, corporations work with suppliers and retailers to develop eco-friendly raw material and components to reduce waste. Intel remains diligent about minimizing their impact on the environment with their suppliers, they set expectations for greenhouse gas emission reporting and reduction. They use a variety of tool and process to manage supplier’s performance to their expectations and example of this programs are assessments and audits and their program (PASS). These two programs are designed to determine a supplier’s risk profile and commitments to compliance, transparency, and capability-building. As it’s mentioned in the article on stage two, the tools that help companies identify the sources of waste in supply chains, are carbon management and energy footprint analysis. Intel exercises leadership in reducing their own footprint, by working with the UN-affiliated intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC).

Important Environmental, Social and Governance Issues

The most important ESG or Environmental, Social and Governance issues in which Intel is working to have a better performance and approach to get better in sustainable responsibilities are environmental sustainability, supply chain responsibility, diversity, and inclusion. In the environmental sustainability, Intel has been working for over 20 years getting great reductions in the environmental footprint. Also, Intel has an approach, which is to have a strong set of green gas emissions goals, and by that, reduce carbon emissions by around 60 percent, which can help to save energy. Intel states that in their environmental sustainability, the company has been America’s largest voluntary corporate purchaser of green power to the U.S. EPA, saving over 55 billion gallons of water through conservation projects since 1998.

Supply Chain Responsibility

The next ESG issue is Supply Chain Responsibility that has different issues, in which Intel is trying to perform better like combating slavery and human trafficking providing employees safety and rights factors. Intel has been working with their most supportive or top-tier suppliers to build a system, which they have an auto detection of any risk of forced and bonded labor. Sourcing conflict-free minerals build more accurate and responsible options for the industry that Intel is working on like using mineral resources to get greater economic opportunities and provide different safety options for miners along with family members. This process is to develop new microprocessors with new technology to make sure that Intel’s product will be conflict-free. Some of the conflict materials are tantalum, tin, tungsten, silver, and gold.

Diversity and Inclusion

Intel as a huge American multinational corporation of technology has been different debates with even tragical violence, and this is due to issues about different races and gender, in which the company considers there should not be different values to different people, but that’s a prejudice that the society has when it comes to significant events and equal opportunity for all. Intel has been trying to gain respect and value with their diversity, and they have proved that they are having actual and real progress. Women are the main target of this issue on Intel’s diversity, in which the society considers women as a minor category who are underrepresented in the workforce. Also, people of different races like African-American, Hispanics and others are included in the minorities, so Intel is expanding opportunities for everyone because the goal of the company is to develop long-term strategies that can help the company get improvements in their constant production of new technology.

Intel’s Link Between Sustainability and Innovation

Many companies now believe that sustainability is the way to go, in that same optic, Intel has also adapted sustainable strategies as well. Intel chose to make sustainability a key strategy vision because it leads them to innovation. Not only this strategy made way for innovation, but it has also provided them with a huge competitive advantage over the non-sustainable organizations out there. Intel has for a long time now been committed to the environment and started with the founder of the company, Gordon Moore, the company strive to improve their energy efficiency and effectiveness. They are really focused and concerned about their environmental impacts, so they have come up with novel ideas to reduce emissions and convert their waste throughout their operations. Some on of the ways they are more innovative are conservation, renewable energy, efficient building design, and other efforts.

Intel is continuously reducing their climate footprint by investing in alternative energies and smarter technologies. Intel has done a lot since 2008 and is still improving their handprint on the world today. Some of the examples are: investing more than $145 million in energy-conservation, projects. Thanks to it, they have saved around 3.19 billion in kWh of energy. They have also installed more than 40 on-site projects that use solar, wind, fuel, cell, and other alternatives energy sources worldwide. They also remained the largest voluntary purchaser of green power in the United States. In 2015, the company has even purchased 3.4 billion kWh of green power, enough to meet the US electricity use at 100%. Intel also joined the American Business Act on Climate Pledge.

The results obtained on each of the triple bottom line three Ps were positive as a whole. Regarding profit, they have increased their numbers by doing what is right both for the business as well as for the environment. People are starting to pay more attention and are more careful regarding what they consume and use in, on and for their bodies. Businesses also need to adapt to that new change as well. The more they do, the more profit they make especially if they were the first to “comply” or introduce a new sustainable concept to the public. Not only sustainability allows them to make more profits, but it also gives then huge competitive advantages over other businesses that have not yet complied with those sustainable requirements.

Technology played a big role in innovation. Solar panel, for example, is sustainable technology that does not pollute but transforms the energy from the sun into electricity. Another example can be Water Energy Hub (WE-Hub) that used solar technology to provide electricity or even water to local people in Kenya. In that optic, we can say that innovation has increased a lot, yes. Sustainability and technical sustainability has made way to different thinking as well as different making. People are more innovative because they are more and more open to their causes and effects on the planet and the other Ps. Companies are also forced to develop products and processes as well as business innovation. To sum up, there is an undeniable link between sustainability and innovation. Sustainability made way to innovation in a way that it inspired businesses to think differently, and in a lasting optic in you will. Thanks to it, organizations have been more effective, efficient, and creative. It has reshaped the way business is done and services are provided.

Intel Use Life Cycle Assessment

According to Intel Corporation’s 2016 Social Responsibility Report, all their products go through each phase of the life cycle. The phases of the life cycle that Intel puts their products through are development, production, use, and disposal. As a result, Intel has come with energy efficiency products, assure the durability of their products, and reduces the environmental impact. In addition, this sustainable development had allocated intel as one of the leading company in sustainable and innovative products in the industry, without mention the continuous increase in revenue, and sustainable products.

Sustainable Product Design Principles

Sustainable products are environmentally conscious products that are designed to be eco-friendly and work efficiently. Intel has been trying to be more sustainable when making its products. The company believes that the reduction of energy consumption is good not only for the environment but also for the bottom line. It understands that its products have some responsibility regarding three stages: manufacturing, use, and disposal. Knowing that Intel tries to do better through product ecology and e-waste initiatives and by manufacturing products that are energy-efficient. E waste, meaning that they are recycling their products and use them again or some part of them when making new products. The company is working with the retailers and customers to recycle the used electronic gadgets.

Dan Probst, who is the Chairman, Energy and Sustainability Services believes that “Smart building technology investment typically pay for themselves within one year or two by delivering energy savings and maintenance efficiency.” (Intel, 2016). Since businesses want to make profits and have a good image, Intel has a program called Smart Building Management to attain its sustainability at its highest. Intel is going beyond its products’ sustainability by making the workplace eco-friendly. The buildings are smart places that make their workers’ lives easier and healthier. For example, SBMS is set to turn the equipment in the conference rooms on and off, depending on the presence of people in the room.  That helps save energy since the mankind is forgetful sometimes.

Lean Systems Approach

Lean systems approach involves reducing the number of raw materials without sacrificing productivity. If waste is eliminated quality improves as well as the time to deliver gets reduced as well followed by production costs. Intel has been utilizing the lean systems approach to identifying and eliminating waste, this technique of production has become a culture at Intel because they know the importance to be involved in sustainable practice throughout their operations. They are really focused and concerned about their environmental impacts, so they have come up with novel ideas to reduce emissions and convert their waste throughout their operations. They are continuously reducing their climate footprint by investing in alternative energies and smarter technologies.

Intel has done a substantial amount sustainable improvement since 2008 and nowadays, they are still improving their handprint. Some of the examples are: investing more than $145 million in energy-conservation, projects. By doing so, they have saved around 3.19 billion in kWh of energy. Additionally, Intel’s recent accomplishment of green manufacturing is the Leixlip campus located in Ireland that went 100% green in 2017. All the energy that they are using for their facilities are being sourced by Irish renewables and this places them in one of the largest private purchases of renewable energy in Ireland. Intel is continuing to support its commitment to environmental awareness and as we mentioned before it is part of their culture to become globally sustainable champion.

Sustainable Supply Chain Practices

Intel uses supply chain practices such as ethical labor police since Intel has been awarded for seventh consecutive years among the best ethical companies to work for. Intel code of conduct was implemented since the beginning of the company and the Intel Human Right Principle formalize the company commitment to bring a fair treatment and value their employees. Moreover, Intel has built an Anti-Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement, which is a strong system to detect and respond to human slavery within any Intel’s manufacture to avoid mistreatment passport holdings, and the charge fees to the employees to maintain their employment. As a result, in 2014 an approximated of $3.5 million were return to employees, who were charged a fee to maintain their employment.

Intel’s focus is to reach the total conflict-free mineral sourcing. Intel has come a long way since 2013 when they decided to utilize mineral sources from a no conflict area. In 2013, around of 70% of their mineral sourcing were conflict-free, and in 2016, Intel was able to reach 92% of conflict-free mineral sourcing. This is an issue that Intel encounters, continues to make progress toward completing 100% of conflict-free sourcing. As proof of Intel’s commitment to the cause, Intel signed a declaration of support to the Responsible Raw Material.

Sustainable Innovation

As is mentioned in the article sustainable innovation is about creating social, environmental, and economic value for all the stakeholders. Meaning that if companies care about the people things will work out for the benefit of the company and you they will have the possibility to expand in new markets. We believe that Intel falls into the category of sustainable innovation because of the social and environmental impact they have done within the years.

Intel has undertaken a series of actions and programs to reduce its carbon footprint and two of them is emission reductions and energy conservation projects. This project includes green building designs, green power purchase, energy conservation chemical substitution, and energy conservation projects. Water management is another example of how they are involved in the environment, Intel invests in innovative water conservation. Intel treats and returns approximately 80% of the water back to the municipal water treatment operations for reuse to local communities.

Information Technology & Resources

Base on the information provided in the previous seminar Intel corporation is allocated in the last stage of the sustainable information system. Intel Corporation is trying to get into the scarce resources especially on water and land where they are trying to reduce and reuse the amount of water used in their manufactures over the world. Intel’s main objectives on water management are: conserve the amount of water that they use in their operations, collaborate with local communities (not exploit the water source of the communities where the manufactures are located), and last create technology solutions to assist communities in how to reinvent ways that they can conserve and use the water more efficient. Below is a map that explains how Intel obtains their water sources in their manufactures.

Moreover, Intel Corporation works with Kio Network to develop a software that cut storage power consumption which increases efficiency. The name of this system is the Solid-State Drive Data Center Family and Ceph. The Ceph software work with the KoolFit private cloud solution offered by Kio Networks which deployed open sources software. Ceph assists the Koolfit by increasing the higher speed of responses and the and allocated the object storage that is easy to deploy and manage in order to eliminate the process for the customers' solution. Ceph and the Solid-State Drive helps Kio Network to cut driving consumption to reduce the energy consumption to 1.6 KW reducing a total of 60% of Hard Disk drive energy.

Intel Sustainability Stages

Intel Corporation’s use of information systems in the stages of the organizational path is substantial to the supply chain and sustainable products and services which are stages two and three. “By using this type of system Intel reduces risk, improves product quality, achieves environmental and social goals and improves performance.” (Intel, 2018) One of the ways that Intel has become innovative in the supply chain in by adding telecommuting. They allow their other locations such as China to use their online resources so that it is accessible for them to provide trainings and other useful information. “Their online resources include the management systems, working hours, social insurance, and lean manufacturing.” (Intel, 2018) We believe that Intel is using an informed and infrastructure investments to continue to be sustainable when building their products. Intel utilizes information systems to base their products on their consumer needs when it comes to electronics and technology.

Intel’s Use Crowdsourcing

Intel does use crowdsourcing to ensure that their products are manufactured in significant working conditions to retail to their consumers. The firm uses the validation process by testing its products in twenty different facilities around the world before they put them for sale on the market. Intel wants to remain serving the highest quality and retain the longevity of its computing and communication platforms.

Intel's GRI Guideline

The following chart contains the findings of Intel Corporations' GRI guidelines, in order to determinate if the company meet all the GRI guidelines.

Shadow Report

At the beginning of the second quarter of 2016, Intel Corporation laid off an approximate of 11% of their global workforce. The most affected area was Oregon, especially the Portland area since Intel is the biggest private company in Oregon. This lay off will help the company to save $750 Million in 2016 and an approximate of $1.5 Billion in 2017. What does it say about their social commitment to their employees?
